Secondary Metabolites from Saussurea deltoidea and Their Inhibitory Activity on Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Tumor Necrosis Factor Production

Bioassay-guided fractionation of the whole plants of Saussurea deltoidea led to the isolation and structure elucidation of one new sesquiterpene, deltoidealactone (1), together with 23 known compounds 2-24. Their structures were established on the basis of extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR analyses in combination with HR-MS experiments. Deltoidealactone (1) inhibits tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) production in U937 cells in vitro with an IC(50) value of 1.47 mu g/ml.
