Raman spectra of ice, NaCl center dot 2H(2)O (hydrohalite), CaCl2 center dot 6H(2)O (antarcticite), alpha-CaCl2 center dot 4H(2)O, gamma-CaCl2 center dot 4H(2)O, CaCl2 center dot 2H(2)O (sinjarite), MgCl2 center dot 12H(2)O, FeCl2 center dot 6H(2)O, FeCl2 center dot 4H(2)O, and a LiCl hydrate are characterized in synthetic fluid inclusions in quartz at about -190 degrees C. Each hydrate can be distinguished on its characteristic Raman bands, which occur at wavenumbers in the range of the stretching vibration mode of water (2800 to 4000 cm(-1)). The spectra provide the basis for the interpretation of Raman spectra obtained in natural fluid inclusions. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
