The (eco)toxicity of the most common ionic liquid anions like [N(CN)(2)](-), [C(CN)(3)](-), [B(CN)(4)](-), [(CF3SO2)(2)N](-), [(C2F5)(3)PF3](-) was investigated in test systems of different trophic level. In the same order, and thus with increasing hydrophobicity, a trend of higher toxicity was found. Especially the [(C2F5)(3)PF3](-) moiety poses a significant hazard towards aquatic organisms.
