The function of the prostate is to provide the bulk of the seminal fluid. Growth and adult function of the prostate are controlled by androgens. Specific responses to androgenic signals are determined by the state of differentiation of the gland. The responses are mediated by paracrine interactions between the stromal and epithelial tissues. Growth factors are believed to play a role in this interactive signaling.
