Products formed from alpha radiolysis of chloride brines

Under alpha irradiation, alkaline chloride brines form H-2 (G = 1.2), O-2 and chlorate proportional to the dose. The concentrations of additionally formed ClO- and ClO2- reach an equilibrium value which depends on the dose rate and the chloride concentration. The solutions become strongly oxidizing (E-h = 900 mV), their pH decreases. This behaviour can be simulated by means of a kinetic model.
