Novel low-firing microwave dielectric ceramics BaMV2O7 (M=Mg, Zn) were prepared by the conventional solid-state ceramic route. A pure orthorhombic phase can be formed at 700 degrees C for both BaMgV2O7 and BaZnV2O7 powders. Two promising ceramics BaMgV2O7 and BaZnV2O7 sintered at densification temperatures (830 degrees C and 720 degrees C, respectively) were found to possess good microwave dielectric properties: epsilon(r)=8.2 and 10.7, Q x f=37600 GHz (at 11.7 GHz) and 31000 GHz, and tau(f)=-35.2 ppm/degrees C and -64.4 ppm/degrees C, respectively.
