Hyperhomocysteinemia and thrombosis

Hyperhomocysteinemia is under extensive investigation as a marker for venous and arterial thrombotic disease. Much evidence points toward a positive association, yet the data are far from conclusive. This article reviews homocysteine metabolism, factors influencing homocysteine levels such as common genetic polymorphisms, results from clinical studies of patients with vascular occlusive disease, and preliminary data with vitamin treatment.
