Older patients undergo surgical procedures more frequently than younger patients. The procedures undergone by elderly patients are often more complex, higher risk, and, although usually elective, more likely to be emergent than in younger patients. Finally, these procedures are more likely to have an impact on the quality of life in this population. This article reviews areas in the preoperative and postoperative settings that can help improve surgical outcomes.
