Management of Service Intelligent(TM) networks must embrace not just monitoring of performance and reliability, but also intelligent maintenance so Lucent Technologies and its customers can respond quickly to network outages and other challenges. Lucent Worldwide Services (LWS) has achieved impressive gains in the speed at which it responds to customers' requests for assistance with their networks by driving its technical support centers and the product houses to design for serviceability (DFS). DFS identifies the features necessary in network elements to support remote maintenance and management, for example. This paper discusses the reasons DFS is critical to Service Intelligent network architectures, the roots of DFS, and the DFS evaluation/scoring and cost models addressing serviceability features, product complexity, and life cycle. It then describes the future state model for intelligent remote maintenance and management, reusable remote diagnostic tools and middleware for network elements in the Service Intelligent network architecture, and Lucent's current DFS initiative.
