Bone homeostasis is a well-balanced process that is largely dependent on the contribution of both bone-forming osteoblasts and bone-resorbing osteoclasts. A new study (Wan et al., 2007) suggests a previously unsuspected role for the transcription factor PPAR gamma in promoting bone progenitors to the osteoclastic lineage.
