The effect of sulfur on the hysteresis loss of non-oriented electrical steel sheets was studied. The hysteresis loss in ultra-low S steel increases with an increase in the final annealing temperature ranging from 975degreesC to 1050degreesC. This phenomenon is associated with an increase in nitride precipitation as AlN near to the surface of the steel. The nitride forming reaction is accelerated by a decrease in S content.
