Concurrent bartonellosis and babesiosis in a dog with persistent thrombocytopenia

Bartonellosis can cause syncope or episodes of collapsing in dogs. In addition to hemolytic anemia, infection with Babesia canis can cause persistent thrombocytopenia. Babesia canis infection might not be detected by microscopic examination of a stained blood smear. A polymerase chain reaction assay can be used to diagnose babesiosis.
