Purpose - This paper, originally published in 1995, seeks to argue that there are three distinct paradigms in manufacturing strategy. Design/methodology/approach - A conceptual discussion and approach are taken. Findings - Finds that over 20 years, the field of manufacturing strategy has developed many different approaches. Argues that there are three distinct paradigms in manufacturing strategy: competing through manufacturing; strategic choices in manufacturing; and best practice. Each is reviewed and its strengths and weaknesses discussed. Originality/value - The relationship between three paradigms is discussed and proposes a cycle of manufacturing strategy.
