Starch was modified through chemical grafted of acrylamide on the starch polymer. Various of grafting percentages have been obtained by changing the concentration of initiator. The prepared polymer has been characterized by IR spectroscopy. The gelation of raw material (starch) and modified polymer (acrylamide grafted starch) according to the equilibrium swelling degree has been investigated in different media (distilled water, n-saline and buffer solution pH 2). Acrylamide grafted starch shows higher uptake of water compared with starch, suggests more hydrophilicity. In vitro controlled release of (CS: Ceftriaxone Sodium) drug from starch and acrylamide grafted starch hydrogel were studied in three different media (distilled water, n-saline and buffer solution pH 2) using ultra violate absorption follow quantities released at different times. The concentrations of drug released increased gradually and then attain affixed value at certain drug load. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
