in this paper, delamination during drilling of carbon/epoxy plates is analysed using the finite element method. The composite plate is modelled by successive layers, allowing the usage of different stacking sequences. The tool is modelled as a 'rigid body', and different tool geometries are compared, as well as axial thrust forces and delamination onset. The model simulations consider non-linear three-dimensional analysis and include the use of previously formulated interface finite elements incorporating a damage model based on fracture mechanics. Results are compared with experimental data. Important conclusions were drawn in order to decrease the probability of delamination occurrence. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
