Aims: Our aim is to evaluate the efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in bipolar I patients without psychotic feature (BIDP-) and bipolar I patients with psychotic feature (BIDP+) retrospectively, in this study. Materials and methods: Clinical records of patients admitted to psychiatry inpatient unit and underwent ECT were scanned; 25 BIDP+ and 15 BIDP- patients' records were included in the study. Clinical Global Impression (CGI) scale, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (Ham-D) and Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) scores both baseline and on discharge as well cis some clinical and socio deMographic characteristics were tabulated from the records. CGI score under 2 on discharge was accepted as response to ECT treatment. Results: Of 25 BIDP+ patients 20 were manic, 3 were depressive and 2 were in mixed state. Of 15 BIDP-patients 7 were manic, 5 were depressive, and 3 were in mixed episodes. There were no significant differences in the duration of hospitalization, rating scale scores (HAM-D, YMRS, CGI) and the number of ECT sessions between two groups. 86.7% f BIPP- patients, 76.0% BIDP+ patients responded to the ECT and the difference between two groups was not statistically significant. Conclusions: In our study, ECT appears to be an effective treatment both in BIDP+ and BIDP-.
