A rock burst is a sudden and violent movement and collapse of rock in underground caves which occurs under high stress conditions. The fracture of rock is often mining-induced and leads to a non-tectonic earthquake. The most frequent cause of rock fractures is blasting, which can cause a rock burst even years later. The occurrence of rock bursts is always difficult to predict and thus they represent a significant safety risk for miners and the population living in mining areas. Severe accidents in the past clearly show the need for legally prescribed prevention of rock bursts within the concept of extended occupational safety and prospective occupational protection.
