There has been being a growing research interest in the biological and medical significance of oxygen and associated oxygenic species in terms of homeostasis and pathologies. As dominant media to interact with oxygen molecules and the related oxygenic species, oxygen-functional materials (OFMs) have attracted broad attention for investigations, especially of biomedical applications. Here, we overview different types of typical OFMs, their material fundamentals, and biomedical functions in diverse oxygen-relevant physical-chemical processes, i.e., oxygen production, activation, and reduction, in a comprehensive manner. Furthermore, the therapeutic applications of OFMs through different material-oxygen interactions are extensively discussed. Finally, on the way to the clinical translations of these theranostic OFMs, prospects, challenges, and possible research progress in the future are outlined, aiming to deliver sophisticated ideas to the design, mechanistic exploration, and biomedical applications of OFMs.
