This study examined the tensile behaviors of suture materials for cardiac surgical purposes based on strain rates, conducted uniaxial tensile tests, and compared results with previous studies. The mechanical behaviors and properties of the sutures were measured, providing insights for future research in this understudied area.
Various studies have been reported in literature over the past three decades on the tensile properties of sutures, knot methods, strength characteristics of knots, lifetime assessments, and biocompatibility evaluations. However, studies on the material properties of cardiac surgical suture or suture materials are insufficient. Therefore, in this study, the tensile behaviors of suture materials for cardiac surgical purposes were examined according to strain rates. Uniaxial tensile tests were performed according to the strain rate and diameter of the suture, and results based on previous studies using this test method were considered for verification. The mechanical behaviors and properties of the suture were also measured, and a comparative study was conducted based on experiment conditions.
