Different patterns of hypoxia aggravate the toxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics in the mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis: Environmental risk assessment of plastics under global climate change

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: Hypoxia caused by human activities and global climate change has a significant impact on marine ecosystems. The influence of nanoplastics on marine organisms has attracted attention, but the impact of hypoxia on nanoplastic risk assessments is often overlooked. This study found that constant hypoxia reduces the accumulation of nanoplastics in mussels by decreasing metabolic rate, while fluctuating hypoxia exacerbates the oxidative damage caused by nanoplastics.

Potential toxicity of nanoplastics to fish and aquatic invertebrates: Current understanding, mechanistic interpretation, and meta-analysis

Summary: This study critically reviews and summarizes the toxicity, influencing factors, and mechanisms of nanoplastics (NPs) on fish and aquatic invertebrates. The results reveal that NPs significantly decrease the survival, behavior, and reproduction of these organisms, while increasing oxidative stress and damage. The effects of particle size, functional group, and concentration range of NPs on physiological and biochemical reactions are also discussed.

Effects of environmentally relevant levels of polyethylene microplastic on Mytilus galloprovincialis (Mollusca: Bivalvia): filtration rate and oxidative stress

Sami Abidli et al.

Summary: The study found that Mediterranean mussels do not accumulate PE-MPs of 40-48 μm size in their tissues, but their filtration rate decreases with increasing concentrations of PE-MPs. Biochemical markers showed that PE-MPs caused oxidative damage at low concentrations and disrupted the antioxidative system at high concentrations. This research demonstrates that PE-MPs have biological effects on marine bivalves at environmentally relevant concentrations.

The circadian cryptochrome, CRY1, is a pro-tumorigenic factor that rhythmically modulates DNA repair

Ayesha A. Shafi et al.

Summary: CRY1, a transcriptional coregulator associated with the circadian clock, is identified as a tumor specific regulator of DNA repair. It is androgen-responsive, stabilized by genomic insult, and promotes DNA repair and cell survival through temporal transcriptional regulation. These findings nominate CRY1 as a new therapeutic target for cancer treatment.

Interplay Between Nanoplastics and the Immune System of the Mediterranean Sea Urchin Paracentrotus lividus

Carola Murano et al.

Summary: This study reveals the interaction between model nanoplastics and coelomocytes of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus, showing that PS-COOH can be quickly internalized and eliminated by coelomocytes, but may still trigger an immune response upon long-term exposure scenarios. The surface charges of nanoplastics play an important role in triggering immunotoxicity, which could exceed toxicity-thresholds for marine benthic species in Mediterranean coastal sediments.

Summary: The study found that different-sized polystyrene beads have varying effects on the antioxidant systems and cell toxicity of Diaphanosoma celebensis, inducing lipid peroxidation in groups exposed to smaller beads. These findings highlight the importance of bead size in cellular toxicity and oxidative stress induction in marine zooplankton.

Combined effect of microplastics and global warming factors on early growth and development of the sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus)

J. I. Bertucci et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the potential risk of the combined effect of global change factors and microplastic pollution on the growth and development of the sea urchin P. lividus. The results showed that exposure to decreased pH and microplastic caused a significant decrease in larval growth, while an increase in water temperature added additional stress, resulting in lower growth and altered development of the sea urchin larvae. The combined stress of ocean warming, acidification, and microplastic pollution may threaten sea urchin populations and have a potential impact on coastal ecosystems.

Interactive transgenerational effects of polystyrene nanoplastics and ethylhexyl salicylate on zebrafish

Ranran Zhou et al.

Summary: The study investigated the transgenerational effects of PS-NPs and EHS on zebrafish, finding that co-exposure intensified the adverse effects. EHS induced growth and developmental toxicity, oxidative stress, and thyroid toxicity in both parents and offspring. The presence of PS-NPs promoted the bioaccumulation of EHS and its transfer to offspring, leading to potential adverse outcome pathways related to thyroid hormone disruption and oxidative stress.
