High-strength and high-conductivity in situ Cu-TiB2 nanocomposites

Shuaihang Pan et al.

Summary: In this study, Cu-TiB2 nanocomposites were successfully fabricated using molten salt processing, with the addition of Al and Fe to achieve high strength and electrical conductivity. The detailed microstructure, phase, and electrical studies validate the feasibility of the proposed procedures. This new method offers promising potential for synthesizing and incorporating nano-phase into copper melt for high-performance Cu nanocomposites.

Influence of Mg on reaction and properties of Al-Si/TiC nanocomposites

Shuaihang Pan et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the reaction mechanism between Si and TiC in AlSi10Mg alloy and demonstrated that the addition of Mg accelerated the reaction. The study also found that the Mg-assisted reaction greatly lowered the ductility of the material. Therefore, the study proposed the use of other elements, such as Ag, to solve this reaction bottleneck.

Multiscale analysis of grain boundary microstructure in high strength 7xxx Al alloys

Alistair Garner et al.

Summary: The size, distribution, and chemical composition of grain boundary-phase precipitates (GBPs) and micro-segregation in two different aluminum alloys have been studied. It was found that the GBPs in AA7050 are larger and more complex, with higher levels of copper and aluminum and lower zinc content compared to AA7085. Limited grain boundary segregation was observed, mainly attributed to differences in the chemical composition of the large Q-GBPs between the two materials.

Regulating solute partitioning utilized to decorate grain boundary for improving corrosion resistance in a model Al-Cu-Mg alloy

Xuebing Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel manipulation pathway using pulsed electric field (PEC) was explored to control grain boundary structure and improve corrosion resistance in age-hardening aluminum alloys. The calculated atomic diffusion results showed that PEC can stimulate atomic diffusion by decreasing the energy required, inhibiting the formation of continuous distribution of grain boundary precipitates and solute depletion zone. This significantly enhanced the corrosion resistance.

Size Control of In Situ Synthesized TiB2 Particles in Molten Aluminum

Jie Yuan et al.

Summary: The study successfully synthesized TiB2 nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution in molten aluminum at high temperatures by controlling the reaction temperature, and also developed an interface diffusion-controlled model to reveal the size control mechanism. Temperature plays a crucial role in regulating the average size of synthesized nanoparticles, while the dilution of reactant salt is essential for maintaining a steady reaction environment.

Nanoparticles Enabled Mechanism for Hot Cracking Elimination in Aluminum Alloys

Maximilian Sokoluk et al.

Summary: By incorporating TiC and TiB2 nanoparticles into hot crack susceptible aluminum alloys 7075, 6061, and 2024, it was found that the principal mechanism of hot cracking elimination is attributed to the unusual modification of both grains and intermetallic phases, as well as a higher liquid fraction at the final stage of solidification.
