Effect of loading spectrum with different single pulsing time on the cyclic ablation of C/C-SiC-ZrB2-ZrC composites in plasma

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: Adjusting single impacting time to perform cyclic ablation with different loading spectra in alternate plasma combustion and compressed air flow provides insights into the characteristics of C/C-SiC-ZrB2-ZrC composites in high frequency pulsing fluid at ultra-high temperatures. Increasing loading time resulted in a sharp rise in ablation rates, with incremental changes in surface temperature. Ablation morphology indicated a shift from mechanical erosion to chemical reaction as the dominant ablation mechanism, leading to the significant increase in ablation rates.

Effect of temperature gradient on the ablation and flexural behavior of C/C-ZrC composites

Tianyu Liu et al.

Summary: A new ablation condition was designed to investigate the effect of temperature gradient on the ablation and flexural behavior of C/C-ZrC composites. The volume change caused by ZrC -> ZrO2 and the ZrO2 crystalline transformation were beneficial for releasing internal stress, thereby contributing to the higher flexural strength retention of the composites.

Cyclic ablation behavior of C/C-ZrC-SiC-ZrB2 composites under oxyacetylene torch with two heat fluxes at the temperatures above 2000 °C

Zhigang Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that at lower heat fluxes, the surface temperature of cyclic ablation following 30s x 4 cycles was lower than that of 60s x 2 cycles. Microstructure characterization revealed a layered structure of the center and transition region.

Ablation behavior of ZrC-SiC-ZrB2 and ZrC-SiC inhibited carbon/carbon composites components under ultrahigh temperature conditions

Zhigang Zhao et al.

Summary: ZrC-SiC-ZrB2 and ZrC-SiC inhibited carbon/carbon composites wedge shaped components were fabricated by reactive melt infiltration and tested on an oxyacetylene torch at a heat flux of 2.38 MW/m2 for 120 s. Compared with C/C composites, both inhibited composites components exhibited better ablation resistance with tip temperatures reaching about 2500 degrees C. Structural evolution on the surfaces of the inhibited composites components included a porous ZrO2 layer near the tip, layered structure of the outer ZrO2 layer, subsurface ZrO2-SiO2 layer in the intermediate region, and SiO2 layer in the tail.
