White matter variability, cognition, and disorders: a systematic review

Stephanie J. Forkel et al.

Summary: Inter-individual differences in brain anatomy can significantly impact treatment procedures and patient outcomes. Studying brain connections through diffusion tractography may be an ideal method to capture this variability. While tractography has shown promise in correlating with cognitive functions and pathologies, there are methodological limitations and biases in the literature to consider.

Uncovering the global task-modulated brain network in chunk decomposition with Chinese characters

Jiaoyan Pang et al.

Summary: Based on the notion of a global brain network, the study used beta-series correlation method to investigate interregional functional connectivity during chunk decomposition tasks with Chinese characters, revealing critical nodes such as the orbitofrontal cortex, superior/inferior parietal lobule, hippocampus, and thalamus. The results suggest that the thalamus acts as an integrative hub across modules, the orbitofrontal cortex tracks mental states, and the parietal lobule manipulates mental representation of chunk decomposition while the hippocampus associates relationships between elements. In addition, the tightness of chunks leads to increased intermodular connections in specific brain regions.

Subcortical syntax: Reconsidering the neural dynamics of language

Elliot Murphy et al.

Summary: The subcortical contributions to core linguistic computations pertaining to syntax-semantics have received little attention. However, this article critiques the dominant focus on the cortex and highlights the rich body of research suggesting possible roles of the subcortex in natural language. The review shows that the subcortex can play a role in various aspects of language processing, such as binary set-formation, lexico-semantic processing, and cross-cortical representational integration.

The genetic architecture of language functional connectivity

Yasmina Mekki et al.

Summary: Language is a unique trait of the human species, and its genetic architecture is not fully understood. Language disorders studies have identified many candidate genes, but a complex and multifactorial trait like language is unlikely to be driven by just a few genes. Case-control studies often lack power to uncover significant variants. Neuroimaging has greatly contributed to the understanding of language in the human brain, and large scale cohorts like UK Biobank have made it possible to study language in the general population using image-derived endophenotypes. Resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI) has become popular due to its strong association with task-based fMRI activations and ease of acquisition. In this study, a multivariate genome-wide association study (mvGWAS) was performed on genetic variations and resting-state functional connectivity (FC) of language areas in the brain. Twenty genomic loci were found associated with language FCs, and three of them were replicated in an independent sample, providing novel insights into the neurobiology of language.

Functional brain connectivity changes across the human life span: From fetal development to old age

Manon Edde et al.

Summary: The review discusses the changes in functional connectivity in the nonpathological brain from fetal life to advanced age. It divides the development of FC into four main phases: before birth, early childhood, adolescence to early adulthood, and aging. These changes involve the emergence, organization, refinement, dedifferentiation, and inversion of functional brain trajectories, which are linked to the development and deterioration of cognitive and sensory functions throughout life.

Significant spatial associations were found between activity alterations in Parkinson's disease patients and dopaminergic and serotonergic systems.

Roles of the Default Mode and Multiple-Demand Networks in Naturalistic versus Symbolic Decisions

Verity Smith et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the default mode network (DMN) in the brain becomes more active during decision-making based on naturalistic contexts compared to symbolic cues. While anterior DMN regions are sensitive to the need for contextual control, posterior DMN regions are responsible for processing contextual content and showing stronger representation of the significance of the modulated sound.
