National diabetes registries: do they make a difference?

Jessica C. G. Bak et al.

Summary: This study investigated 12 national clinical diabetes registries worldwide, including 7.18 million diabetic patients. Most registries recorded weight, HbA1c, lipid profile, and insulin treatment, with variations in recording other variables. The registries generally corresponded well with the ICHOM standard set, and most were found to monitor and improve the quality of diabetes care using guidelines as benchmarks.

Incidence and predictors of type 1 diabetes among younger adults aged 20-45 years: The diabetes in young adults (DiYA) study

Jean M. Lawrence et al.

Summary: The study estimated the incidence rates of type 1 diabetes (T1D) among young adults, and developed a T1D prediction model based on diabetes autoantibody (DAA) testing. The results showed that T1D accounted for up to 8% of incident diabetes cases among young adults, with predictors including female sex, younger age, lower BMI, insulin use, and specific diagnostic codes. Follow-up is needed to further explore the clinical course of patients with one positive DAA at diagnosis.

Impact of routine clinic measurement of serum C-peptide in people with a clinician-diagnosis of type 1 diabetes

Evgenia Foteinopoulou et al.

Summary: The study showed that routine use of serum C-peptide testing in an out-patient clinic setting can help accurately classify individuals with a clinician-diagnosis of type 1 diabetes of at least 3 years duration, leading to improved diabetes management in some patients.

Adult-Onset Type 1 Diabetes: Current Understanding and Challenges

Summary: Recent epidemiological data indicates that over half of new cases of type 1 diabetes occur in adults. Key genetic, immune, and metabolic differences are present between adult-onset and childhood-onset type 1 diabetes, many of which remain poorly understood.

High incidence of type 1 diabetes in adolescents and young adults in Eritrea

Goitom Mebrahtu et al.

Summary: The study in Eritrea aimed to determine the incidence of type 1 diabetes in individuals aged <25 years, revealing moderate rates in those under 15 years and high rates in the 15-24 age group. Incidence peaked in the 15-19 and 20-24 years age groups, with the latter showing the highest rates reported to date. Further confirmatory prospective studies are needed to clarify the situation and document trends, as well as to assess the type 1 diabetes phenotypes occurring in Eritrea.

Rapid increases in observed incidence and prevalence of Type 1 diabetes in children and youth in Mali, 2007-2016

Jessica Lynn Sandy et al.

Summary: From 2007 to 2016, a total of 460 cases of T1D in individuals under 25 years old were diagnosed in Mali, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.04:1 and a peak age of onset at 15-16 years. The incidence of T1D increased from 0.12 to 0.74 per 100,000 population per year, with a consistent rise in prevalence as well. The overall mortality rate was 30.0/1000 patient years, indicating a significant increase in diabetes incidence and prevalence in Mali.

Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults (LADA) Is Likely to Represent a Mixed Population of Autoimmune (Type 1) and Nonautoimmune (Type 2) Diabetes

Angus G. Jones et al.

Summary: LADA, diagnosed after age 35, presents clinical features similar to type 2 diabetes but with type 1 diabetes-associated islet autoantibodies. The current definition of LADA identifies a group with features intermediate between typical type 1 and type 2 diabetes, leading to difficulties in classification. Improved approaches are needed to increase test specificity and better understand the detailed pathophysiological components of late-onset autoimmune diabetes.
