Simulation study on in-cylinder combustion and pollutant generation characteristics of PODE/methanol blends

Junheng Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the cooperative control of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from compression ignition engines using polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE) and methanol as diesel alternative fuels. The results show that the addition of methanol increases combustion pressure, shortens combustion duration, and reduces NOx emissions and soot emission.

Performance and emissions of a pilot ignited direct injection natural gas engine operating at slightly premixed combustion mode

Qiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance and emissions of a pilot ignited direct injection natural gas engine operating at slightly premixed combustion mode, finding that this mode can improve brake thermal efficiency and reduce CO and soot emissions at different engine loads. However, it also showed that NOx and THC emissions could be impacted by the adoption of slightly premixed combustion mode. The effects of injection parameters on engine performance were found to be highly dependent on engine load, leading to different trends in thermal efficiency and emissions.

Numerical investigation and experimental validation on the leakage of methanol and formaldehyde in diesel methanol dual fuel engine with different valve overlap

Baodong Ma et al.

Summary: The study investigated the methanol and formaldehyde emissions of the diesel methanol dual fuel engine using a computational fluid dynamics model coupled with a detailed chemical kinetic mechanism. The results showed that the unburned methanol and formaldehyde in the cylinder were the main part of the total emissions. When the intake valve opening and exhaust valve closing changed simultaneously, the increase in valve lift during scavenging had a significant impact on methanol leakage.

Experimental study on the application of bioethanol in dual-fuel intelligent charge compression ignition (ICCI) engine

Yaoyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the ICCI combustion mode with bioethanol-diesel blend can significantly improve the thermal efficiency of internal combustion engines and reduce emissions levels. The stable combustion process and reduced emissions were achieved with a 64% bioethanol substitute ratio.

An experimental study of engine characteristics and tailpipe emissions from modern DI diesel engine fuelled with methanol/diesel blends

Ahmad O. Hasan et al.

Summary: The study found that blended methanol can reduce HC and CO emissions in tailpipe, but increase NOx emissions; smoke emissions significantly decrease as the percentage of methanol in blends increases. Pure diesel showed higher brake thermal efficiency and lower fuel consumption at all engine loads.
