The food neophobia scale: Factorial and construct validity in the Australian population

Debra Ann Metcalf et al.

Summary: The current study validated the ten-item scale of food neophobia in a large Australian sample, but found the six-item unidimensional version to be a reliable and valid measure. The correlations between the approach and avoidance facets of food neophobia with extraversion and neuroticism support construct validity. Additionally, a new measure of the motivation to eat new foods was evaluated post hoc.

Approach and avoidance motivation and interest in new foods: Introducing a measure of the motivation to eat new foods

John B. Nezlek et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new measure of motivation to eat new foods, with two subscales - approach motives and avoidance motives. Confirmatory Factor Analyses confirmed the existence of these subscales and relationships with motivation, curiosity, and personality were established. Additionally, the measure showed incremental validity compared to the Food Neophobia Scale.
