Appraising the factors favouring uranium mobilization and associated health risk assessment in groundwaters of north-western India

Diana A. Sharma et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the factors favoring the uranium mobilization into the groundwater of Northwest India using uranium isotope activity ratio, radon, and environmental isotopes of water. The results indicate that the source of uranium is mainly vertical percolation of rainwater and regional flows, with leaching process controlling the uranium mobilization into the groundwater.

Distinguishing Mountain Front and Mountain Block Recharge in an Intermontane Basin of the Himalayan Region

Tanveer Dar et al.

Summary: Intermontane basin aquifers, particularly in the Himalayan region, are predominantly recharged by adjacent mountains. This study used various data methods to differentiate and quantify mountain front recharge and mountain block recharge, with results suggesting that karst springs and deep groundwater in the Himalayan region are mainly recharged by snowmelt, while shallow groundwater is primarily recharged by local meteoric water and evaporation.

Meta-analysis of uranium contamination in groundwater of the alluvial plains of Punjab, northwest India: Status, health risk, and hydrogeochemical processes

Prafulla Kumar Sahoo et al.

Summary: Despite numerous studies, there are still many knowledge gaps in understanding uranium (U) contamination in alluvial aquifers in Punjab, India. This study compiled a large hydrogeochemical dataset to identify major factors controlling U mobility and enrichment in groundwater. The results showed that shallow groundwaters are more contaminated with U than deeper depths, with salinity and total dissolved solids playing a significant role in U mobilization.

The origin of Uranium in groundwater of the eastern Halkidiki region, northern Greece

Nerantzis Kazakis et al.

Summary: The study investigated uranium pollution in groundwater in the eastern Halkidiki region of northern Greece, using an integrated hydrogeological approach. Three hydrogeochemical groups with different characteristics were identified, with U(VI) as the dominant uranium species. The study also found that the presence of manganese and the residence time of groundwater play significant roles in the hydrogeochemical process.

Arsenic and selected heavy metal enrichment and its health risk assessment in groundwater of the Haridwar district, Uttarakhand, India

M. U. Khan et al.

Summary: This study presents new data on the distribution and health risks of arsenic and other heavy metals in groundwater in Haridwar, India. The dominant contaminant in the groundwater was found to be iron, followed by manganese, arsenic, copper, nickel, lead, chromium, and cadmium. The study also identified the likely mechanism of arsenic release and assessed the level of heavy metal pollution and associated health risks. The results show that the heavy metal pollution level was moderate to low, but there were significant non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks associated with arsenic and heavy metal contamination.

Hydrogeochemical and health risk assessment in and around a Ramsar-designated wetland, the Ganges River Basin, India: Implications for natural and human interactions

Imran Khan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics and pollution of surface water and groundwater in Saman wetland and the surrounding areas in the Ganges River Basin, India. The results show that the wetland waters are alkaline and influenced by leaching of nitrogen ions and geogenic processes. The water quality assessment indicates poor groundwater quality for drinking purposes, while the surface water is suitable for irrigation. However, the presence of nitrate and fluoride in groundwater poses health risks, especially for children, making it unsuitable for drinking.

Contamination of Arsenic, Chromium and Fluoride in the Indian groundwater: a review, meta-analysis and cancer risk assessment

T. Poonia et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of groundwater levels of arsenic, chromium, and fluoride in different states of India, highlighting the severe impact of these contaminants on the health of the natives. The study compares the concentration levels with standard limits, revealing significant differences among states. The research also identifies regions severely affected by contamination and highlights gaps in the existing studies.

A Time-Series Record during COVID-19 Lockdown Shows the High Resilience of Dissolved Heavy Metals in the Ganga River

Tanuj Shukla et al.

Summary: Research shows that reducing industrial discharge during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown significantly decreased dissolved heavy metal concentrations in the Ganga River, while agricultural and domestic discharges remained unaffected. This highlights the potential for industrial wastewater minimization programs to rapidly improve heavy metal pollution in rivers.

Melting of the Chhota Shigri Glacier, Western Himalaya, Insensitive to Anthropogenic Emission Residues: Insights From Geochemical Evidence

Sarwar Nizam et al.

Summary: The study found that the Chhota Shigri Glacier surface is essentially free of anthropogenically emitted particles, and its high melt rate is primarily related to global warming. This suggests that the future meltwater supply from glacial-fed rivers originating from Lahaul and Spiti region could be at risk and requires immediate attention.

The Role of Manganese Carbonate Precipitation in Controlling Fluoride and Uranium Mobilization in Groundwater

Ashwini Kumar Mohapatra et al.

Summary: Groundwater contamination with fluoride and uranium is a common issue in many parts of India, with limited understanding of their sources and mobilization mechanisms. The present study identified calcite precipitation-induced fluorite dissolution as a key factor contributing to the coexistence of elevated F and U in shallow groundwater, while elevated Mn in deeper groundwater may play a critical role in controlling F and U concentrations in the shallow aquifer.
