Summary: This study successfully fabricated human skin equivalents with disease features and simulated the lesions of atopic dermatitis. Unlike existing studies relying solely on mouse models, this study overcame limitations and provided useful results for the development of therapeutic agents for atopic dermatitis.

Development of an Aged Full-Thickness Skin Model Using Flexible Skin-on-a-Chip Subjected to Mechanical Stimulus Reflecting the Circadian Rhythm

Subin Jeong et al.

Summary: The study accelerated aging of a full-thickness skin equivalent through periodic mechanical stimulation, replicating the circadian rhythm for 28 days. Accelerated aging characteristics included reductions in epidermal layer thickness, contraction rate, and secretion, as well as increases in gene expression and secretion of reactive oxygen species. This model is expected to greatly accelerate drug development for skin diseases and cosmetics.

Effect of α-Lipoic Acid on the Development of Human Skin Equivalents Using a Pumpless Skin-on-a-Chip Model

Kyunghee Kim et al.

Summary: The pumpless skin-on-a-chip (SOC) technology was used to evaluate the efficacy of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) on skin tissue and epidermal structure formation. Results showed that ALA has anti-aging effects on the skin and can increase expression of epidermal structural proteins, reducing damage caused by aging. This technology has the potential to be used for functional drug tests of cosmetic materials and contribute to the development of skin disease models in the future.

The impact of indole-3-lactic acid on immature intestinal innate immunity and development: a transcriptomic analysis

Wuyang Huang et al.

Summary: The study found that the metabolite ILA from breastmilk has pleiotropic protective effects on immature enterocytes, including anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and developmental regulatory potentials, and its effects are region-dependent and age-dependent. Furthermore, quantitative transcriptomic analysis revealed that the STAT1 pathway plays a crucial role in IL-1 beta-induced inflammation, and ILA has a regulatory effect on this pathway.
