Criteria for lactic acid bacteria screening to enhance silage quality

B. F. Carvalho et al.

Summary: The main challenge of ensiling is to conserve feed while minimizing fermentative losses. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have been widely studied and used in the fermentation process, showing potential for enhancing human and animal health. Further research is needed to explore the selection and application of new LAB strains for improving the quality of ensiled products.

The effects of Lactobacillus hilgardii 4785 and Lactobacillus buchneri 40788 on the microbiome, fermentation, and aerobic stability of corn silage ensiled for various times

Erica Benjamim da Silva et al.

Summary: The inoculant containing a combination of Lactobacillus hilgardii and Lactobacillus buchneri significantly improved the aerobic stability of corn silage after a relatively short period of ensiling. Inoculated silages had greater numbers of culturable lactic acid bacteria, less rich and diverse bacterial community, higher relative abundance of Lactobacillus, lower relative abundance of Klebsiella, and a greater concentration of propionic acid than uninoculated silages after 34 days of ensiling.

Different lactic acid bacteria and their combinations regulated the fermentation process of ensiled alfalfa: ensiling characteristics, dynamics of bacterial community and their functional shifts

Jie Bai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different inoculants on the fermentation quality, bacterial community dynamics, and metabolic pathways in alfalfa silage using SMRT sequencing technology. The results showed that the adaptation and competition of inoculated bacteria could significantly impact the bacterial community structure and metabolic pathways during ensiling, affecting the fermentation process and quality of the silage products.

Selection of lactic acid bacteria from native grass silage and its effects as inoculant on silage fermentation

Sihan You et al.

Summary: The study isolated, characterized, and identified wild lactic acid bacteria strains from native grass silage on the Inner Mongolian Plateau, and investigated their effects on the fermentation characteristics of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid silage. Among the isolated LAB strains, XM2 showed the highest crude protein, lactic acid, and ratios of lactic acid/acetic acid, while also having the lowest pH, ammonia nitrogen, and other acid content. XM2 strain is considered a potential starter culture for sorghum-sudangrass hybrid silage.

Summary: Evaluation of lactic acid bacteria strains isolated from corn silages showed that certain strains can effectively reduce dry matter loss and improve aerobic stability of silage, especially L. farraginis CCMA1362 which demonstrated significant reduction in yeast numbers. Further studies are needed to assess the efficiency of these strains under field conditions.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a bioinoculant for improving ensiling of forage used for livestock feed, by building up a bacterial consortium derived from guinea grass phyllosphere. Through a series of cultivation and dilution steps, the consortium showed the potential to degrade plant biomass and produce key (hemi)cellulose-degrading enzymes, suggesting its usefulness in biotechnological applications to enhance silage processes.

Summary: The effects of commercial and pure lactic acid bacteria (LAB) inoculants on fermentation and levels of aflatoxins and other mycotoxins in corn silage were investigated. The study found that the inoculants had minimal effects on fermentation, but different inoculants had varying effects on aflatoxin levels. Further research should focus on the relationship between LAB and mycotoxigenic fungi during ensiling.
