Dendritic Features of the Solidification Structure in a Large AA3004 Direct Chill (DC) Cast Ingot

Q. Han

Summary: This study examines the dendritic features of the largest type of commercial DC casting ingot and sheds light on the impact of grain refiners and convection-induced floating grains on the final grain size distribution. The findings reveal the presence of equiaxed grains with coarse secondary dendrite arms and short primary dendrite arms, except for a thin chill layer on the surfaces. The analysis suggests that floating grains can survive at temperatures slightly above the liquidus of the alloy. Additionally, the study highlights the dominant mechanisms of grain refinement in alloy casting processes and solidification under external fields.

Revisiting the Role of Solutes in Grain Refinement of Hypoeutectic Alloys

Q. Han

Summary: The experimental data on grain size in hypoeutectic alloys reveal a clear correlation between grain size and the solidification range of the alloy. Two-parameter models are proposed to correlate grain size to phase diagram variables, showing that the minimum grain size occurs at the solubility limit of the solute on a phase diagram, while the maximum grain size occurs at the pure metal and eutectic point. The linear relationship between grain size and the solidification range is stronger than that between grain size and the growth restriction factor.
