Full-Space Manipulations of Electromagnetic Wavefronts at Two Frequencies by Encoding Both Amplitude and Phase of Metasurface

Lei Bao et al.

Summary: The paper proposes a dual-band metasurface operating at microwave frequencies, which can independently manipulate the amplitude and phase responses of reflected and transmitted waves in two half-spaces at different frequencies by changing the opening and orientation angles. This design opens up possibilities for multifunctional metadevices with amplitude and phase modulations in the full space, with potential applications in imaging and communication systems.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for 6G Systems: Principles, Applications, and Research Directions

Cunhua Pan et al.

Summary: Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) or intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are considered as one of the most promising and revolutionizing techniques for enhancing the spectrum and energy efficiency of wireless systems by reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment through carefully tuning the phase shifts of a large number of low-cost passive reflecting elements. The article aims to address four fundamental questions and highlights eight promising research directions.

On the Path-Loss of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: An Approach Based on Green's Theorem Applied to Vector Fields

Fadil H. Danufane et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a physics-consistent analytical characterization of the free-space path-loss of a wireless link in the presence of a reconfigurable intelligent surface. The proposed method is based on the vector generalization of Green's theorem and can be applied to two-dimensional homogenized metasurfaces. The obtained path-loss model includes multiple design parameters and operating regimes, providing closed-form expressions for far-field and near-field deployments.
