The anammox coupled partial-denitrification process in an integrated granular sludge and fixed-biofilm reactor developed for mainstream wastewater treatment: Performance and community structure

Jin-Long Zhuang et al.

Summary: This study introduces an innovative reactor called iGB-A/PD, which combines granular sludge and fixed-biofilm to remove nitrogen from municipal wastewater. Compared to other A/PD systems, this reactor has higher effluent quality and nitrogen removal rate. Gene expression analysis confirms the important role of anammox bacteria in nitrogen removal and reveals high expression of other genes related to nitrogen conversion. Kinetic assays and mass flux determination show the activity and importance of different regions of the reactor in nitrogen conversion. Metagenomic analysis identifies the dominant species involved in the process.

Performance characteristics and community analysis of a single-stage partial nitritation, anammox and denitratation (SPANADA) integrated process for treating low C/N ratio wastewater

Feng Zhou et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel one-stage nitrogen removal method that integrates partial nitrification, anammox, and denitratation for the treatment of low C/N wastewater. The expression of key genes for nitritation, anammox, and denitratation increased as reactor performance improved. Analysis of the metagenome revealed the dominant genera of ammonium-oxidizing bacteria, anammox bacteria, and denitratation bacteria. Mass balance confirmed that anammox was the dominant nitrogen removal pathway.

Salinity effect on freshwater Anammox bacteria: Ionic stress and ion composition

Limin Lin et al.

Summary: The study found that NaCl, KCl, and Na2SO4 have different inhibitory effects on freshwater Anammox bacteria, with NaCl inhibiting the transport of ammonium and Na2SO4 inhibiting the transport of nitrite and ammonium. High salinity inhibits functional enzyme activity, indicating that both ionic stress and ion composition contribute to the observed inhibition effects.

Insight into quorum sensing and microbial community of an anammox consortium in response to salt stress: From Candaditus Brocadia to Candaditus Scalindua

Zebang Zhu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that increased salinity led to a decrease in the abundance of Candidatus Brocadia and dominance of marine anammox bacteria Candidatus Scalindua in the reactor at higher salinity levels. Salinity was identified as the main driving force affecting the distribution and diversity of the anammox consortium. Furthermore, the quorum sensing feedback mechanism of anammox bacteria under salt stress was investigated, showing an increase in N-(3-oxohexanoyl)-DL-homoserine lactone concentration and enhanced coordinated interaction in the consortium.
