Unraveling the Kinetics and Mechanism of Surfactant-Induced Wetting in Membrane Distillation: An In Situ Observation with Optical Coherence Tomography

Senlin Shao et al.

Summary: In this study, direct contact membrane distillation was used to investigate the wetting kinetics induced by surfactants. The research revealed a three-region relationship between wetting rate and surfactant concentration, starting from the nonwetted region and transitioning to concentration-dependent and concentration-independent regions. The wetting behavior was largely influenced by the autophilic effect of surfactants transferring to the unwetted membrane and the subsequent movement of the wetting frontier under capillary forces.

Wetting indicators, modes, and trade-offs in membrane distillation

Allyson L. McGaughey et al.

Summary: This study introduces a simple solute mass balance method to determine vapor and liquid flux in membrane distillation. By observing changes in distillate salinity and liquid flux, wetting can be diagnosed, wetting rates quantified, and the number of wetted pores indicated. Different wetting modes and potential trade-offs between wetting resistance and water production are identified, providing insights for membrane design and operation in various applications.

Effect of cations on surfactant induced membrane wetting during membrane distillation

Mengmeng Lou et al.

Summary: Different cations have contrasting effects on membrane wetting, with Ca2+ and K+ significantly increasing flux. The characteristics of the feed solution indicate that Ca2+ and K+ enhance the Krafft point and hydrophobicity of micelles. Through molecular dynamics simulations, the mechanism of surfactant-induced membrane wetting has been further elucidated.

The Impact of Micelle Formation on Surfactant Adsorption-Desorption

Dirk J. Groenendijk et al.

Summary: The monomer-micelle equilibrium leads to an asymmetry between surfactant adsorption and desorption rates. Adsorption of monomers to the surface is favored over micelle formation, resulting in slow desorption rates limited by the critical micelle concentration.

Investigation of Surfactant-Membrane Interaction Using Molecular Dynamics Simulation with Umbrella Sampling

Yunqiao Ma et al.

Summary: This study used molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the interactions between surfactants and a hydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride surface, finding that considering all interactions concurrently is necessary to fully explain the mechanism underlying membrane fouling by surfactants. The results highlight the importance of understanding the complex interplay between surfactant-water, surfactant-membrane, and water-membrane interactions in the context of membrane filtration.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using Low Salinity Water as a post-flush to enhance surfactant desorption in EOR production practice. The results showed that this scheme effectively reduced the interfacial tension between the surfactant and oil, leading to an improved total Recovery Factor.
