An integrated process for mixed culture production of 3-hydroxyhexanoa-te-rich polyhydroxyalkanoates from fruit waste

Fernando Silva et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the feasibility of producing a ter-polymer enriched in 3-hydroxyhexanoate (HHx) from waste using a mixed-culture 3-stage process. By fine-tuning each stage and selecting a highly efficient PHA-accumulating culture, the process achieved unprecedented values of yield, productivity and HHx fraction, making significant progress towards upscaling the production of HHx-rich PHA from waste.

Potential of anaerobic co-fermentation in wastewater treatments plants: A review

N. Perez-Esteban et al.

Summary: Fermentation is an emerging biotechnology for transforming waste into easily assimilable organic compounds. Co-fermentation of multiple waste streams in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can increase the yields of sludge fermentation. The most studied variables in co-fermentation include mixing ratio, pH, and temperature. Continuous co-fermentation can be optimized by controlling temperature, pH, hydraulic retention time, and organic load. This review provides a comprehensive and critical overview of co-fermentation research and lays the foundation for future studies.

Continuous recovery and enhanced yields of volatile fatty acids from a continually-fed 100 L food waste bioreactor by filtration and electrodialysis

Rhys Jon Jones et al.

Summary: A novel method for recovering volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from a continuously-fed food waste bioreactor was developed, increasing production rates to 35 mg VFA/gVSS/day by alleviating end-product inhibition and arresting methanogenesis. The recovered VFAs were concentrated to 4000 mg/L through electrodialysis, making them suitable for use as platform chemicals with minimal refining. This represents a promising means of producing sustainable platform chemicals and also helps reduce methane emissions from bioreactors.

Recovery and enhanced yields of volatile fatty acids from a grass fermentation via in-situ solids separation and electrodialysis

R. J. Jones et al.

Summary: An industrially applicable methodology utilizing a novel combination of filtration and electrochemical separation technologies was successfully used to recover and enhance the production of volatile fatty acids. The yields of volatile fatty acids were increased and concentrated in a solution suitable for downstream conversion to platform chemicals. The study suggests that there is potential to further increase volatile fatty acid recovery rates and yields by increasing the capacity of the recovery methodology.

Production and Destination of Sewage Sludge in the Piemonte Region (Italy): The Results of a Survey for a Future Sustainable Management

Giuseppe Campo et al.

Summary: The management of sewage sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants is a pressing issue, with a survey in the Piemonte region revealing that a significant amount of sludge is disposed of outside of the region or used in agriculture. In response to rising costs and stricter regulations, the regional authority is considering reorganizing its sludge management network with solutions based on proximity and diversification, potentially requiring the planning of new plants for treatment and recovery of sludge.

Influence of different household Food Wastes Fractions on Volatile Fatty Acids production by anaerobic fermentation

Giuseppe Strazzera et al.

Summary: The research investigated the influence of different fractions of Household Food Wastes on Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) production for the first time. Fractions rich in proteins and starch led to higher VFA production, while those rich in cellulose, fibers, and sugars showed lower VFA production. The microbial communities composition was also influenced by the chemical nature of the food waste.
