Sorption of Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) including its isomers on hydrargillite as a function of pH, humic substances and Na2SO4

Jean-Noel Uwayezu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of pH, humic acid, fulvic acid, and Na2SO4 on the distribution of PFOS isomers between hydrargillite and the water phase. The results showed that the distribution coefficients of PFOS isomers increased at lower pH and decreased at alkaline conditions. The presence of humic substances slightly increased the sorption, while Na2SO4 contributed to increased sorption through ionic strength effects.

Highlighting the Anti-Synergy between Adsorption and Diffusion in Cation-Exchanged Faujasite Zeolites

Jasper M. van Baten et al.

Summary: Using simulations, we show that adsorption and diffusion do not occur simultaneously in FAU zeolites, with stronger adsorption leading to reduced mobility. This finding has implications for the design of pressure-swing adsorption and membrane separation technologies for CO2 capture and N-2/O-2 separations.

Properties and fate and transport of persistent and mobile polar organic water pollutants: A review

Erik R. R. Christensen et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the properties and fate of polar organic pollutants in natural waters and engineered aquatic systems. It discusses the occurrence and treatment efficiencies of various compound groups, including PFAS, pesticides, PPCPs, and other compounds. The review also presents a new approach to characterizing mobile compounds based on their basic properties and provides insights into the current status and research needs of aquatic and multimedia models. The findings suggest that many pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors can be effectively removed from water through sorption, chemical oxidation, photolysis, and biodegradation. Additionally, sediment core profiles may not accurately reflect the chronological production and use of polar organics due to post-depositional mobility of water-soluble compounds. The review proposes a novel method for identifying mobile compounds using sediment records, and highlights the development of models for PFAS, insecticides, fungicides, atrazine, and pharmaceuticals.

The EU Green Deal's ambition for a toxic-free environment: Filling the gap for science-based policymaking

Joanke van Dijk et al.

Summary: Despite the implementation of many ambitious environmental conventions and regulations globally, the environment continues to deteriorate. In response to this, the EU published a chemicals strategy for sustainability in October 2020, aiming to address chemical pollution in a holistic manner. However, the lack of a clear definition for key terms, such as toxic-free environment, in the strategy could potentially hinder its implementation.

A theoretical probe into the effects of material and operational variables on water purification with zeolite membranes

Seyed Soroush Mousavi Khadem et al.

Summary: This study simulated the effects of different Si/Al ratios and pressures on zeolite membrane water purification, finding that increasing pressure enhances water and ion flux through the membrane, especially at low Si/Al ratios. MFI membrane had the highest rejection rate, while LTA membrane exhibited the highest water flux. Van der Waals patterns indicated heavy metal ions trapped in zeolite.

Can porous carbons be a remedy for PFAS pollution in water? A perspective

Dipendu Saha et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoro alkyl substances (PFAS) are emerging pollutants in water sources worldwide, raising concerns about their potential health impacts. One proposed method for PFAS removal is through adsorption in porous carbons, which have shown promising features but face challenges in practical applications. By modifying the structure and surface functionalities of porous carbons, better adsorption efficiency for PFAS can be achieved. Incorporating computational analysis may aid in designing superior porous carbons for PFAS removal.

Summary: Emerging adsorbents derived from natural and renewable sources are being explored as environmentally friendly and more efficient alternatives to conventional activated carbon for PFAS removal. These alternative adsorbents are evaluated for their efficacy in removing PFAS and their practicality in real water treatment, reuse, and continuous operation. Further research and development are needed to explore the potential applications of these adsorbents and address the research needs for their advancement.
