Burning plasma achieved in inertial fusion

A. B. Zylstra et al.

Summary: A burning-plasma state has been achieved in the laboratory using a laser facility to generate X-rays and compress and heat a fuel-containing capsule. Experiments show fusion self-heating exceeding the mechanical work input, and a subset of experiments appear to have crossed the static self-heating boundary, providing an opportunity to study α-particle-dominated plasmas and burning-plasma physics.

Design of inertial fusion implosions reaching the burning plasma regime

A. L. Kritcher et al.

Summary: Burning plasma state has been achieved at the US National Ignition Facility using indirect-drive inertial-confinement fusion. More efficient hohlraums and improved symmetry control have allowed for effective heating by alpha particles from fuel fusion reactions. This is significant for the progress of inertial-confinement fusion.

Extensions of a classical mechanics piston-model for understanding the impact of asymmetry on ICF implosions: The cases of mode 2, mode 2/1 coupling, time-dependent asymmetry, and the relationship to coast-time

O. A. Hurricane et al.

Summary: It has been discovered that low mode asymmetry in inertially confined fusion (ICF) implosions is a limiting factor for performance. A nonlinear theory based on a simple asymmetric piston model provides formulas for estimating the degradation of an implosion due to mode-1 asymmetry and reveals the relationship between measured hot-spot drift velocity, nuclear down-scatter ratio asymmetry, and residual kinetic energy (RKE). The asymmetry of the implosion shell, rather than the hot-spot, is key in this classical mechanics model.

Exploring implosion designs for increased compression on the National Ignition Facility using high density carbon ablators

D. S. Clark et al.

Summary: High compression is crucial for achieving high yields in inertial confinement fusion. A new implosion design called SQ-n aims to control hydrodynamic stability and achieve higher compression on the National Ignition Facility (NIF). SQ-n adopts a ramped foot pulse shape and an extended ablator dopant distribution to minimize perturbation growth. This paper describes the design philosophy, instability modeling, and planned experimental campaign of SQ-n.

Evidence of Three-Dimensional Asymmetries Seeded by High-Density Carbon-Ablator Nonuniformity in Experiments at the National Ignition Facility

D. T. Casey et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that nonuniformity in the ablator shell thickness in high-density carbon experiments is a significant cause for observed 3D rho R asymmetries, leading to rho R asymmetries of approximately 25% and hot spot velocities of around 100 km/s. This work provides insight into the significant implosion performance degradation in ignition experiments and highlights the need for stringent requirements on capsule thickness metrology and symmetry.

Understanding asymmetries using integrated simulations of capsule implosions in low gas-fill hohlraums at the National Ignition Facility

J. L. Milovich et al.

Summary: Research on NIF capsule implosions using high-density-carbon ablators and high-energy lasers has identified potential causes of asymmetry, such as beam-to-beam variations in laser delivery and coupling to target features like diagnostic holes for X-ray imaging. Simulations of NIF shots without diagnostic holes to isolate beam-to-beam variations reproduced observed nuclear diagnostic signatures fairly well. Sensitivity studies on ablator thickness variations showed that these are comparable in effect to peak drive mode-1 asymmetries.

A pushered capsule implosion as an alternate approach to the ignition regime for inertial confinement fusion

S. A. MacLaren et al.

Summary: In this article, the competition between heating and disassembly rates in inertial confinement fusion is considered, and a Lawson-like ignition criterion for pressure x confinement time (p-tau) vs temperature is developed based on prior solutions to fusion hot-spot thermodynamics. A new pushered single shell (PSS) ignition design is described, utilizing a dense inner layer of Mo-Be alloy to increase confinement time at stagnation and lower the temperature requirement at ignition threshold. The design adjustment to anticipate mixing effects at the fuel-ablator interface is also discussed.

Low mode implosion symmetry sensitivity in low gas-fill NIF cylindrical hohlraums

N. Izumi et al.

Summary: Achieving efficient capsule implosion in National Ignition Facility indirect-drive target experiments requires maintaining symmetric hohlraum x-ray drive throughout the laser pulse. However, experimental evidence shows that maintaining symmetric drive becomes limited late in the pulse, especially for hohlraums employing low gas-fill. By combining multi-keV X-ray imaging with varying parameters, a physics-based multi-parameter experimental scaling was developed to explain the results and compare them to radiation hydrodynamic simulations for a more complete understanding of how hohlraum, capsule, and laser parameters affect drive symmetry.

Summary: The Lawson-like criterion for ignition in a dynamic implosion takes into account asymmetry and differences in x-ray confinement quality, showing the need for yield amplification levels of 16-32. However, the negative pdV work of expansion after stagnation increases energy losses, and a higher dimensional generalization of the ignition criterion is needed to account for implosion cooling upon disassembly.

Metrics for implosion performance with enhanced energy coupling on NIF

Summary: Recent experiments on NIF have shown that the evaluation metric used previously — energy absorbed by the capsule — is not adequate and weakly correlated with implosion performance. Metrics incorporating additional information, such as hot-spot energy multiplied by pressure squared or ignition threshold factor (ITFX), show much stronger correlations with performance and should be used for guiding further improvements in the experimental program.
