Recent Advances in Chemical Sensors for Soil Analysis: A Review

Marina Nadporozhskaya et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the recent advances in chemical sensors for soil analysis, including the working principles, benefits, and drawbacks. It also provides an overview of the select applications of both single selective sensors and multisensor systems for assessing main plant nutrition components, pollutants, and other important soil parameters in the past two decades, with a focus on the last 5 years.

Determination of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) Using Nanoparticle-Modified Voltammetric Sensors and Electronic Tongue Principles

Qing Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of nanoparticle-modified voltammetric sensors for the rapid and green determination of chemical oxygen demand in river waters and agricultural waste waters. Different modified electrodes were prepared and assessed for their response features, showing the most sensitive electrode to be the (CuO/Cu-Nf) electrode. The sensor array provided joint information for estimating the organic load and sample characteristics, forming an intelligent sensor assembly.

Molecularly imprinted polymers - towards electrochemical sensors and electronic tongues

Anna Herrera-Chacon et al.

Summary: Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are artificial materials that mimic the molecular recognition process of biological macromolecules, and when combined with electrochemical techniques, can significantly improve sensor performance. However, MIPs may still show cross-responses to other compounds. The combination of MIPs with chemometric methods can lead to the development of new electronic tongue sensor array systems.

Summary: Smart fertilizer introduction can decrease the negative impact of chemicals on the environment without reducing crop yield dramatically. Carefully tuned fertilizer amounts are based on actual nutrients content in the soil and plant growth period. Fast and simple analytical tools are necessary for soil analysis in the laboratory.
