New layered manganese oxychalcogenides with alternating Cu(2)Q(2) and perovskite oxide layers have been synthesized, where the perovskite oxide layers are (MnO2)(SrO)(SrO)(MnO2) and (MnO2)(SrO)(MnO1.5)(SrO)(MnO2) for Sr2CuMnO3S and Sr(4)Cu(2)Mn(3)O(7.5)Q(2) (Q = S, Se), respectively. Jahn-Teller distorsion due to Mn3+ is evident in both compounds. (C) 2000 Academic Press.
