Physicochemical properties of the Cu(II)- and Zn(II)-phenoxyl radical complexes of ligand 1H and its 2,4-di-tert-butyl derivative 2H have been examined as models for the active form of galactose oxidase to shed light on the role of the thioether group in the novel organic cofactor. [GRAPHICS]
