Selenosis

The most common cause of selenosis in US livestock is accidental or intentional overuse of nutritional supplements. Chronic selenosis from natural sources, although less common, is very important in some locales. Many of the target organs and effects of acute selenium toxicity are similar to those of selenium deficiency, and therapy is usually unrewarding. Prevention consists of minimizing exposure to seleniferous feedstuff and optimizing other dietary factors that might aggravate selenosis.
