Long distance (over 500km) transmission of 10Gbit/s based wavelength division multiplexed signals using in-line semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) has been successfully demonstrated with a bit error rate (BER) better than 10(-14) utilising the wavelength modulation technique. With the normal transmission scheme, there is an error floor mar the BER of 10(-4) regardless of the transmission distance, which is due to the cross-gain modulation effect in the SOA.
