The Drosophila melanogaster Y chromosome has long been known to contain few functional genes other than several required for male fertility. The D. melanogaster genome sequence has now allowed characterization of two more male fertility genes, shedding light on the function and evolution of Y chromosomes. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
