For over two decades scientists have been exploring ideas for creating molecular electronic devices. The aim has been to make functional units consisting of a very small number of molecules, perhaps only one molecule, that are capable of switching a current. Many such elements could then be combined to create computers and other electronic circuits. The hope has been that this approach will lead to the ultimate miniaturization of devices as well as to optimal operating efficiency and the lowest cost. While this scenario remains little more than a dream, some key steps have recently been made. Here, I outline some back-ground information, and as well, briefly review some recent developments front our lab.
