It is frequently considered that, for many people, symptomatic osteoarthritis involving the lower limb joints is a largely preventable 'lifestyle disease'. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the most recent scientific evidence examining the effect of various lifestyle factors, such as physical activity, obesity, diet, smoking, alcohol and injury, on the development of symptomatic knee or hip osteoarthritis. The strengths and weaknesses of various studies are discussed, the magnitude of any demonstrated risks presented and current overall conclusions drawn. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
