Augmentation cystoplasty remains the most widely accepted reconstructive technique for creating a compliant and large-capacity urinary storage unit that protects the upper urinary tract and provides urinary continence for people with bladder dysfunction due to noncompliance or reduced functional capacity. The technical steps in performing a laparoscopic bladder augmentation are designed to emulate its open surgical counterpart in every aspect, thereby producing similar functional results with an improved recovery. This article describes the authors reconstructive techniques of laparoscopic enterocystoplasty that have been refined through the authors initial experience in performing 12 procedures. Based on our reported experience, laparoscopic enterocystoplasty is technically feasible and successfully emulates the established principles of open enterocystoplasty and minimizes operative morbidity. Similar to open surgery, various bowel segments can be fashioned and anastomosed to the bladder using laparoscopic techniques.
