The aim of this work is to review the last 10 years articles about Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) as a toot for characterization of microorganisms. Various FTIR techniques like transmission, attenuated total reflection, microspectroscopy, have been used to characterize bacteria, yeast or other microorganisms. Chemometric methods as hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal component analysis (PCA) or artificial neural network (ANN) are rapidly reminded. Publications are then listed, according to the purposes of the studies: taxonomical classification, discrimination according to susceptibility to antibiotic, etc. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
