8'-Iodo-8-[1-(1'-phenylthio)ferrocenyl]-1,1'-binaphthyl, a precursor of chiral phosphines, and 8' (4-methylphenyl)-8-[1-(1'-phenylthio)ferrocenyl]-1,1'-binaphthyl, a model compound for the preparation of charge-transfer complexes were synthesized via Suzuki coupling reactions of ferrocenylboronic acids and 8-substituted 8'-iodo-1,1'-binaphthyls. Sequential substitution of 8,8'-diiodo-1,1'-binaphthyl provided a facile method of gene-rating unsymmetrical 8,8'-disubstituted 1,1'-binaphthyls. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
