Phase formation, microstructure and interdiffusion of hard magnetic Nd2Fe14B films on Cr and Ta buffers are compared, and the consequences of the chosen buffer on the magnetic properties of the films are considered. While on a Ta buffer. the growth is more perfect than on Cr and a higher coercivity is found in film,, on Cr. indicating the importance of domain wall pinning. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
