Giant mitochondria are a response to low oxygen pressure in cells of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.)

Low oxygen pressure induces fast and reversible formation of giant mitochondria in cells of Nicotiana tabacum. These can have unusual shapes, attain a length of 80 mum and even form a reticulum. In contrast to animal cells, there is no such response to chemically induced oxidative stress.
