Optical characteristics of silica glass optical fibers containing CO2+ doped ZnO-Al2O3-SiO2 (ZAS) glass-ceramics prepared by slurry-doping method were investigated. The absorption and emission bands of the fibers were found to be originated from the tetrahedral CO2+ in ZnAl2O4 crystals in ZAS glass-ceramics particles embedded in the core of the fibers. The crystal field strength of the Co2+ ions in the optical fiber was found to be smaller than that of the Co2+ ions in the bulk ZAS glass-ceramics. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
